The United Nations declared the time between 2021 and 2023 to be the UN-decade for ecosystem restoration. This decade is meant to create awareness for the value of intact ecosystems. Functional ecosystems with their ecosystem services are crucial for our society and valuable habitats for a large variety of animals, plants, fungi and microorganisms.

By the award of exemplary projects the UN-decade demonstrates how conservation and restoration of ecosystems and their natural diversity can be implemented in Germany. It illustrates the importance of active commitment for the environment. The awarded projects function as role models and positive examples.

The projects "MARA" has now been awarded in the category "water bodies and floodplains". Per each category only three projects receive this highest award.
